Providence Presbyterian Church has supported the Dettweiler family since 1998.
Steve & Sonia Dettweiler are members of Wycliffe Bible Translators and have been working in Nigeria since 1991.
Sonia, who is Alan & Alma Gordon’s daughter, was born in Brazil, and received a Bachelors degree in French at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, and a Masters of Business Administration at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Canada. Before meeting and marrying Steve, she spent one term with Wycliffe Bible Translators working with the Suruí Indian Tribe in Northwestern Brazil.
Steve was born in Kitchener, Ontario, received a Bachelors in Math at the University of Waterloo, and in Education at the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Theological Studies at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto, and a Masters in Linguistics at the University of Texas at Arlington.
The Dettweilers are now living in Jos, Nigeria. The focus of their work is to see Nigerians equipped for and engaged in Bible translation and development of the over 500 languages of Nigeria. Steve teaches in the Bible translation degree program of the Theological College of Northern Nigeria (TCNN). Sonia works part time in the mission finance office, serving more than 35 Wycliffe missionaries as well as Nigerians involved in Bible translation.
Their two sons, Joel (born 1993), and Micah (1995), are students at the Hillcrest International School in Jos. Joel is in the Class of 2011 and Micah in the Class of 2013. Joel plays bass guitar in the High School student Praise Team. Micah plays trumpet in the High School Band, as well as in other ensembles.
