Yes, Virginia, there is a Satan.

I just finished watching Nightline’s Face Off: Does Satan Exist? (You can watch the whole thing on-line). There were 4 panelists. On the existence of Satan side were Mark Driscoll, pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, and Annie Lobert, a former prostitute who came to Christ. On the non-existence of Satan side were Deepak Chopra, a medical doctor and Bishop Carlton Pearson, former megachurch pastor and prosperity gospel preacher who lost his church when he began preaching a more universalist message.

Watch it and see what you think?

According to the Bible, Satan is real. Satan is actually more real than Santa Clause (and they are not one and the same, no matter how the Church Lady manipulates the letters!). But I don’t believe in the pop culture version of Satan. The bible makes it clear that there is a Satan but Satan has no power over us. Satan can tempt us, even torment us, but Satan has no power over us. “How about in the book of Job?” Read it. Satan had no power to do anything to Job unless God authorized it. God had the power, God was in control the whole time. So we don’t walk around saying “My life is all messed up because of Satan.” No, Satan has no power to mess you up. Satan can tempt you and lure you to do the wrong things. But Satan cannot make us do it. We mess our lives up. Look up Acts 5. Ananias was the one who lied, he was the one who came up with the plan. Peter told him “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…” Satan filled his heart, but Ananias lied.

So: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Satan. But don’t worry… because you have a Savior, Satan can’t do anything to you.”
