“Advent” means “coming” or “arrival.” During the season of Advent, we celebrate Christ’s coming into the world and watch with expectant hope for his coming again. The four weeks of Advent present an opportunity for collective discernment and personal examination, as the church prepares to celebrate the Nativity of the Lord and looks with hope to Christ’s return. At Providence we begin the season of Advent as many church families do: with a thanksgiving celebration and decoration of our ancient sanctuary.
On the first Sunday of Advent, Pastor Karen Witt preached on preparing our hearts for Christ’s coming. She urged us to shift our gaze away from our hand-held devices, our worldly pursuits, and to focus instead on making room anew in our hearts for the Christ child. Here is Karen’s sermon. As you listen, prepare your mind for God’s word to refresh your heart this Advent.
