In Word and Deed

Like many commentators, the Holman Bible Dictionary notes that the Gospel of “Mark has been called the ‘gospel of action.’  One of [Mark’s] favorite words in telling the story of Jesus is ‘immediately.'”  That word or a synonym is employed at least five times in Mark 1 to help describe Jesus’ early ministry of action.  In her sermon on February 1, Pastor Karen Witt preached on Mark 1:21-28 and noted that Jesus’ merciful act — healing a demon-possessed man in the Capernaum synagogue — made as great an impression as the words he spoke.  “The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, ‘What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.'”  Mark 1:27.  Pastor Karen’s message encouraged Jesus’ disciples to follow his example of sharing the Good News through loving actions … when possible, “immediately!”
