A small band of members braved the ice and cold on March 1 to worship God and celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Pastor Karen Witt preached on Mark 1:9-15, in which the gospel writer described in just a few words Jesus’ baptism, temptation in the wilderness, and start of his ministry. Karen focused much of her sermon on the short but loaded verse 12: “At once the Spirit drove [Jesus] into the wilderness ….” Like Jesus we also may spend time in a wilderness — depression, loneliness, separation, illness, pain, unemployment … the list is long — and sometimes the Spirit drives us there. Knowing Jesus has been there before can sustain us and give us hope. Karen’s message is a thought-provoking way to open our hearts for lent.
